How to choose a lawyer in Toronto
Four steps that take less than an hour and save a lot of trouble later.
- Match the practice area
Lawyers specialise. A real estate lawyer is the wrong call for a wrongful dismissal. Start from the practice area that fits your problem.
- Check the licence
Look the lawyer or paralegal up in the Law Society of Ontario's public directory to confirm they're licensed and in good standing.
- Compare fees and first steps
Ask how they bill: hourly, flat fee or contingency. Ask what the first step would be and roughly what it costs. Get it in writing.
- Book a consultation
Shortlist two or three firms and talk to them. Many offer a free first consultation. Pick the one that explains things clearly.
Lawyer or paralegal?
Ontario is one of the few places where licensed paralegals can represent you on their own. For the right kind of case, they can cost less.
A licensed paralegal can help with
- Landlord and Tenant Board hearings
- Small Claims Court cases
- Traffic tickets and provincial offences
- Some minor criminal charges
- Many tribunals, such as human rights and benefits

Questions before hiring a lawyer
Short answers. For advice on your own situation, talk to a licensed lawyer or paralegal.
Read the legal guidesHow much does a lawyer cost in Toronto?
It depends on the type of matter and the firm. Many Toronto lawyers bill by the hour, some charge a flat fee for set tasks such as a real estate closing, an uncontested divorce or a will, and personal injury lawyers usually work on contingency, taking a percentage of what you recover. Ask for the fee arrangement in writing before you hire anyone.
Can I get a free first consultation?
Many firms offer a short free first consultation, especially for personal injury, employment and family matters. Use the Free consultation filter on any results page. The Law Society of Ontario also runs a Law Society Referral Service that can connect you with a lawyer or paralegal for a free consultation of up to 30 minutes.
How do I check that a lawyer is licensed?
Every lawyer and paralegal who practises in Ontario must be licensed by the Law Society of Ontario. You can look anyone up in the Law Society's public Lawyer and Paralegal Directory, which shows their licence status and any public disciplinary history. We check listings against it too.
Should I hire a lawyer or a paralegal?
Licensed paralegals can represent you in Small Claims Court, at the Landlord and Tenant Board and other tribunals, and for traffic tickets and some minor offences, often for less than a lawyer. For divorce, buying or selling a home, wills and estates, serious criminal charges or larger lawsuits, you generally need a lawyer.
What if I can't afford a lawyer?
Legal Aid Ontario provides certificates and duty counsel for people who qualify financially, and community legal clinics across Toronto give free help with housing, income support and employment problems. Use the Legal Aid filter to find firms that accept Legal Aid certificates.
